Overpaid $200 for a cable tester that a $30 homemade rig beat

Last month I bought a fancy harness tester at an auction for a steal, so I thought. Spent about $200 including shipping, and it kept giving me false continuity readings on my bench. I burned a whole Saturday chasing a short in a flap harness that was actually fine. Then my old coworker showed me his homemade rig with a 9V battery, a resistor, and a multimeter from Harbor Freight. It checked the same circuits in half the time and never hiccuped once. I feel like I paid for a name when the old school method was better. Anyone else got a pricey tool that let you down and made you go back to the cheap trick?
