After 5 years of pushing back, I finally use the manufacturer pinout docs first
I used to pride myself on tracing everything by hand with the multimeter and the old schematic, even when the prints had conflicting revisions. Then last month we had a Cessna 172 with an intermittent NAV light issue in the shop, and I burned a whole afternoon chasing a ground that turned out to be a pin relocation on the newer harness. The lead tech on the shift, Gary, just pulled up the current pinout table from the avionics maker's portal and pointed at page 4. Took us 20 minutes to swap the pin and verify the circuit. That was the moment I stopped treating the manual as a suggestion and started using it as the first step, not the last resort. Now I check the revision date on the pinout before I even break out the meter. It feels like cheating, but my troubleshooting time on new installs has dropped by at least a third. Anyone else ever get humbled by a simple pinout change that made them switch their whole process around?

Page 4. That's always where the good stuff hides. Reminds me of the time I spent a whole day chasing a flap motor issue on a Piper Arrow, only to find out the wire colors changed between two logbook entries and the actual harness had the old ones still in it. Gary saved me once too, with a blown fuse that was visually fine, but he just pointed at the ammeter and said, "It's the fuse, trust me.
