A pilot in Dallas told me to always check the nav database version before signing off a GPS, and now I do it every time.
He said 'you can have a perfect install, but if the box thinks it's over Kansas when it's really over Texas, that's on you' after we had a plane come back for a squawk last year, and has anyone else had a database issue cause a real headache?

That's a good way to end up taking the scenic route to the wrong state. Sounds like that pilot saved you from a future of very confused map reading.

Read somewhere that our brains are actually pretty bad at rotating maps in our heads. Makes sense why so many people get turned around.

That Dallas pilot is right, the database is the weak link. @the_morgan's scenic route could turn into a real navigation error if the box has old info. It's a simple check that fixes a problem before it even starts.
