My uncle in Dallas ran a transport brokerage for 20 years and told me to quit booking open carriers for classic cars
I called him last week after I almost booked a 69 Chevelle on an open carrier to save about $400. He just laughed and asked if I wanted rock chips on a car I spent two years restoring. He said he watched a guy do that exact thing back in 2019 and the car showed up with a cracked windshield and a scratched fender, and the carrier fought the claim for 4 months. I ended up paying extra for enclosed and the car arrived spotless from Dallas to Phoenix. So now I am wondering, is there any real case for open carriers on nice older cars or is my uncle just old school?
A 69 Chevelle is worth way more than the 400 bucks you saved, so your uncle did you a solid there. Open carriers are fine for beaters and daily drivers, but for something you spent two years restoring, the risk just isn't worth it. Tell your uncle he's not old school, he's just seen enough messed up cars to know better.
