Still thinkin' about that customer who watched me for 2 hours

Guy stood over my shoulder in the bay making small talk while I swapped his transmission mount, then complained about the $600 labor cost after I showed him the rusted bolts. Anyone else get customers who act like they're watching a show then question the bill?

Youre missing the point a bit here. The guy was curious and probably nervous about dropping $600 on his car, so he hung around to see what the work actually involved. Thats pretty normal for someone who isnt a mechanic. Watching you swap that mount was him trying to understand where his money was going. Then you showed him the rusted bolts, which should have proven why the job was worth it. Complaining about the labor after seeing the effort and conditions feels like a separate thing, but the watching part was just him being engaged with his own repair.

Last time I had my truck in the shop, I sat there for an hour and a half watching them replace my alternator. The mechanic even handed me the old one to show me the burnt windings, and I felt way better about the $500 bill after that. I agree with @hannahs45, if you're spending that kind of cash, you want to see what it buys you.

Oh come on, I get what you're saying but watching for TWO HOURS isn't just "being engaged." That's a weird amount of hovering. Like yeah be curious for 15 minutes, get your questions answered, then go grab coffee or something. Standing there the whole time is just awkward for everyone and makes it feel like he didn't trust you at all.
