Remember when timing chains were built to last the life of the engine?
I just pulled apart a 1995 F-150 with 280k miles and the timing chain still had factory spec on it. Now I'm seeing chains stretch at 100k on newer stuff, guess it's all about cost cutting and thinner metals. Anyone else notice this shift over the last 20 years?

Wouldn't that be nice, I used to defend modern engineering until my own 2010's sedan needed a new chain at 90,000 miles?

It's not exactly thinner metals though, lol. The real problem on those 2010s engines is usually the VVT system putting extra load on the chain plus cheaper tensioners that bleed pressure. My buddy's 2012 Chevy ate a guide at 95k and it wasn't even stretched, just the plastic guide shattered.
