Repair vs replace on a 2008 Hyundai Elantra door shell, found a price that made me question everything
Got a 2008 Elantra in the shop this week, passenger rear door got swiped pretty good. I was about to quote out a skin repair, then I looked up the OEM shell price and it was only $340. That's less than what I usually charge for the labor on a skin replacement, and I was sitting there doing the math like wait, why am I even bothering with the pull and fill route? I found that price on a parts diagram site, first time I've seen a shell that cheap for a car that old. Is this normal for commuter cars now, or am I just behind on what manufacturers are charging? Anyone else run into this where the factory part makes the repair a no-brainer, but then you gotta deal with paint match on a 15 year old silver paint job that's already faded on the other panels? Curious how you guys handle that call.
$340 for a whole shell and they still gotta match faded silver? That paint is gonna look like a patch on a pair of jeans no matter what you do. You could paint the whole car with what you save on not messing with filler and sanding for two days. Might as well slap the shell on and tell the customer it's the new "patina" look, free of charge.
