I gave up on plastic filler over bare steel and a $22 can of etch primer shut me up
For the last 6 months I was slapping body filler straight onto bare steel on every quarter panel and door skin that came through my bay in Albuquerque, because that is how the old timer I worked under did it and it always held up fine. Then a 2019 F-150 came in with rust bubbles creeping out around the wheel arch 8 months after I fixed that exact spot, and the customer was not happy about paying twice. I stripped it back down and the filler was basically lifting off the metal with a thin film of rust underneath, which told me moisture was getting in and sitting there. I picked up a $22 can of etch primer, shot two coats before any filler went on, and that same truck has been back twice for oil changes with zero issues. Anyone else switch to priming bare steel before filler, or do you still go straight to mud and just deal with the comebacks?
