I finally found a way to spot hail dents without dragging out the floodlight every time
Been doing paintless dent work for 11 yrs now and the worst part has always been the walk around on a cloudy day. You know the drill, you pull the car into the shop, close the bay doors, kill the lights, then run that one halogen lamp across every panel at a low angle. Takes me close to 20 minutes on a full size truck and my arm is dead by the end.
Last month a guy dropped off a silver Tahoe that caught a storm up near Greeley. Overcast outside, no sun at all. I was about to do the lamp thing when my new guy hands me one of those cheap LED headlamps, the kind with the adjustable beam, and tells me to just tilt my head low and sweep it across the roof. Dents popped like someone drew them with a marker. Took me 4 minutes instead of 20. The trick is the beam has to be close to the surface and at a shallow angle, same as the halogen, but now both my hands are free and I am not hauling a cord around.
Only catch is on white and pearl paint it is not as clean, the beam washes out a bit. Silver and darker colors it is almost cheating. Anyone got a different setup for light colors? I am still burning 15 min on white roofs and it is killing me.
