Clear coat over old single stage? Glad I tested on a scrap fender first
Had a 1990 Dodge pickup in the shop last month where the owner wanted a cheap re-spray over the tired original paint. I figured a quick scuff and shoot with urethane clear would work fine, but I tried it on an old scrap fender with the same type of paint first. The clear crazed and spiderwebbed within a day, looked terrible. Learned that some old single stage pigments react with modern reducers and lift right up. Anybody else run into this weird reaction on classic paint jobs, or did I just get unlucky with that red color?
