Unpopular opinion: That viral photo of the Horsehead Nebula is overprocessed

I saw that highly upvoted image on the front page yesterday and I just don't get the hype. The colors were so boosted it looked like a cartoon. I've been shooting DSOs from my backyard in Tucson for about 3 years now, and I think people are confusing vibrant data with good data. My buddy Dave even said 'punchy sells' but honestly I think it hides the real faint details. To me, a natural palette shows the actual gas structure way better than cranking the saturation. Has anyone else noticed this trend of overcooking nebula shots in stacking? What do you think makes a solid astrophoto stand out?

Guilty as charged, my last M42 looked like a radioactive cotton candy.

Honestly, I had the same problem until I backed way off on the saturation. Like, I started doing my final stretch in Photoshop and pulling the vibrance slider down by like 15-20%. It made the nebula look more natural, and the stars actually stayed white instead of turning into a rainbow mess. Tbh, that one change saved my edits from looking like candy floss.

Isn't that just how everything looks when you push it too far?
