TIL my backyard photo of the Andromeda galaxy actually hit 800 likes on AstroBin
Started shooting deep sky stuff 14 months ago with a used Canon T3i I got off Craigslist for $150. Last Tuesday I checked my AstroBin page and my Andromeda shot had passed 800 likes, which is wild because I almost deleted it. The first stack was garbage, trails everywhere, so I re-shot it over 3 nights from my driveway in Phoenix. Used 47 lights at 120 seconds each, plus 20 darks and 30 flats. Seeing was maybe 3 out of 5 on those nights. I honestly posted it just to get feedback on my star color and forgot about it. Anyone here ever have a shot you almost trashed end up being your best one?
47 lights at 120 seconds is a solid start but the math works out to about 94 minutes of total exposure, which is on the low side for pulling out the faint dust lanes in M31. Andromeda has a really bright core, so it tricks you into thinking you got more data than you did. Not trying to knock the shot, getting 800 likes means your processing was doing a lot of heavy lifting. Did you stretch it in PixInsight or just Photoshop?
