Struggling with overexposed craters in my lunar photos from last night's session.

Would stacking shorter exposures or lowering the ISO yield better surface detail?

Blending a couple longer exposures for shadow detail with your shorter shots might help. It's like a manual HDR approach specifically for the moon's high contrast.

Why not try stacking and lowering ISO?

Stacking does wonders for clean shadows. Lower ISO avoids blowing highlights. My rig needed twenty frames at ISO 800. Alignment took forever but the result was smooth. Don't skip dark frames either.
