My uncle said my Milky Way shot looked like a 'blurry mess' and I'm still mad about it
This was at a family cookout in Boise last summer. I was really proud of a photo I took at Bruneau Dunes, a 20-second exposure of the galactic core. I showed him on my phone and he just squinted and said, 'Looks like someone smeared Vaseline on the lens. I've seen better pictures on a cereal box.' He didn't ask about the gear, the planning, the drive out there in the middle of the night, nothing. It wasn't just a bad opinion, it was a total dismissal of the whole craft. That one comment made me stop sharing my work with family for a good six months. Has anyone else had a moment like that where someone just didn't get it at all?

That comment was about his own lack of vision, not your photo. Some folks just don't have the eyes for creative work, so they dismiss what they can't understand. His cereal box line says more about his world than your skills.

My cousin did the same thing with my concert photos. Called them "confusing" because I used a slow shutter to show motion in the lights. Some people just see a photo as a simple snapshot and can't grasp the work behind it. It's like they expect every picture to look like a postcard.
