Heard a guy at the star party say he never checks his gear before a shoot

I was at the Cherry Springs event in Pennsylvania last weekend, and this photographer was bragging about how he just sets up his tracker and goes. He said, 'My pictures are fine, I don't need to waste time on that.' Later, I saw his shots on a screen and they were all trailed. It made me think skipping a simple polar alignment check can ruin hours of work. How many of you have a set pre-shoot checklist you actually stick to?

Ever notice how this happens with everything? People skip the basics then act shocked when their stuff fails. Dude just wasted a whole night to save five minutes.

I mean, sometimes the basics are a waste of time though. If you already know what you're doing, skipping steps can be the smart move. Maybe that guy's method usually works and he just got unlucky this one time.
