Captured my 50th nebula shot from a parking lot in Reno and I finally get why stacking matters
I hit 50 saved nebula images in my folder on Sunday and it honestly surprised me because I started this hobby just trying to get one shot of Orion that did not look like a smudge. The big thing I learned around shot 30 was that stacking is not optional. I used to shoot 40 or 50 frames of 8 seconds each and just pick the best single one. Once I stacked all of them in the free software, the noise vanished and I could actually pull out color in the Lagoon Nebula. The sky here in Reno is around Bortle 5 so I figured faint stuff was hopeless, but the math changed everything. Each sub is dim and grainy, but 60 of them added together gives you something your eye can follow. The weird part is I stopped caring about buying fancy gear and started caring about shooting more frames and throwing away the bad ones. My best shot so far came from a random parking lot off Virginia Street with a cheap tripod and a lot of patience. Anyone here shoot from a bright city and have a go-to exposure length that works for them?
