TIL my cheap amazon scale was lying about body fat for 2 years

I've been using this $25 scale from Amazon every morning since 2023, tracking body fat percent like it was gospel. The number kept creeping up no matter how much I ran or cut calories. Last week my gym got one of those handheld devices with the metal grips and it showed me at 18% body fat while my home scale said 24%. That's a huge gap and it wrecked my whole training plan because I was eating to chase a number that wasn't even real. Turns out those cheap scales just guess based on weight and maybe your height, they don't actually measure anything accurately. I dug into the manual and even the fine print says it's for reference only. Now I'm wondering how many other people are basing their meals on a fake reading like I was. Has anyone else compared their home scale to a professional one and found it way off?

That "reference only" fine print is doing a lot of heavy lifting lol. Even the handheld ones at the gym are just guessing based on how fast electricity moves through you, which changes with hydration and food timing. Honestly the only real way to know is a DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing, and even those have a margin of error.
