The day a broken fly rod in the Smokies changed my whole approach

I was fishing Little River near Townsend three summers ago, and my cheap rod snapped on the second cast into a deep pool. That hike out made me realize I'd been buying gear based on price instead of durability. Has anyone else had a piece of equipment fail at a bad time and had to rethink their whole kit?
