Spent 3 hours trying to fix a toilet that just needed the chain adjusted

I was about to call a plumber for a toilet that kept running, then my partner looked at it for 30 seconds and hooked the chain back on the flapper. Has anyone else spent way too long troubleshooting something that had a dead simple fix?

Nah it's actually the flapper chain that needs the hook, not the chain itself. Usually the hook is what clips onto the flapper arm, and the chain just hangs loose if it slips off. Either way though, it's wild how many hours we waste on stuff that turns out to be a 5 second fix after someone else looks at it.
