My boss told me I ask too many questions in meetings, so I tried something different
Last month my boss pulled me aside after our Monday team meeting and said I ask questions just to hear myself talk. I was pretty embarrassed because I always figured asking stuff made me look engaged. So for 2 weeks I wrote my questions down instead and only asked the ones I still cared about after 5 minutes. Turns out about 7 out of 10 of them answered themselves once I sat with them. Now my meetings are way shorter and people actually listen when I do speak up. Has anyone else been told they talk too much in meetings, and how did you handle it?
Getting called out for talking too much stings but at least your boss said it to your face. I had a similar thing happen and started doing the same trick, writing stuff down and waiting before I ask. Half the time I cross it off and the meeting moves on, so you're not alone in this.
The writing stuff down trick is good but what really helped me was waiting for the last five minutes of the meeting. I used to jump in on every single thing the second it popped in my head and people got tired of it. Now I keep a little running list on the back of whatever paper is in front of me and only bring up the stuff that still matters when the boss asks if anyone has questions. Half those things I wrote down look dumb an hour later and I just toss the paper. The other half actually add something because I had time to think it through instead of blurting it out. Took me a couple months to break the habit but it works.
