I used to think the 'ask anything' format would just get silly questions, but a thread about local zoning laws in my town actually got a real city council member to respond.

Wait, is this the part where I admit I once asked my city council member about why the park bench was painted over? I was so sure it was a conspiracy, but turns out it was just regular maintenance. Felt like a real detective for a minute there.

Yeah, the "big brain moment shrinking real small" is a perfect way to put it. I've learned to just start with the most boring explanation first. In my experience, nine times out of ten, the answer is either "the old one broke" or "it's the standard replacement." Save the detective work for when you find two identical benches painted different colors on the same street. That's usually just a paint supply shortage though.

Honestly, that's the best part of these threads. You start off feeling like a citizen journalist and end up just happy someone answered. @riley_west, your bench detective work is a whole mood. I once emailed my councilor a very long, worried note about a new traffic light pattern, convinced it was a secret plan to cause chaos. The reply was basically, "The old timer broke, this is the standard replacement." Felt my big brain moment shrink down real small. It's good to be reminded that most stuff isn't a plot, it's just paint drying and lights changing.
