Hot take: I used to just answer questions straight up, but then I tried framing them as 'what would you do' scenarios
On a post last week about handling rude comments, my direct advice got two replies, but when I rephrased it as 'You're getting flamed in your own thread, what's your next move?' it sparked a 50-comment discussion. The difference was giving people a puzzle to solve instead of a lecture to read. So what's a better way to get people actually talking here?

Wait, but isn't a straight answer sometimes exactly what people need?

My neighbor asked me last week which plumber I used. I gave her the name and number, no extra advice. She texted later saying that direct info was a lifesaver during her kitchen flood. We've all been in situations where too much talk just clouds a simple solution. Sometimes people just need the facts to move forward.

Your neighbor was smart to ask because that's the kind of info that keeps a flood from wrecking your whole kitchen.
