Appreciation post: I just read that the average person asks about 20 questions a day, according to a study I found on a university's psychology department blog.

That stat, which I found while looking up something else, made me realize how much curiosity we actually act on, and has anyone else come across a simple fact that shifted how you see a normal activity?

That listening stat hits home. My crew talks about focusing on the person, not just the words. It makes a real difference when you actually try to hear them.

That 25% listening stat gets thrown around a lot but I call bs. Most people are actually pretty decent listeners when it matters. If we were all that bad at it, nothing would ever get done at work or at home. The real issue is we have to listen to so much boring stuff every day that our brains just filter it out to save energy. It's not a personal failing, it's just efficiency.

Heard a story from a buddy that changed how I see small talk. He read that the average person only listens with about 25% efficiency. He told me he started actually paying full attention when his wife talked about her day, instead of just waiting for his turn to speak. Said it totally changed their dinners. Made me realize we hear a lot but we don't really listen most of the time. Simple facts can punch you right in the gut.
