The site at Cahokia used to be so open and now it's just a mess of fences
I visited the mounds back in 2010 and you could walk right up to Monks Mound, no problem. Went again last week and the whole base is fenced off with signs everywhere. They say it's to stop erosion from foot traffic, which I get, but it feels like you're looking at a postcard instead of a real place now. It's been over a decade and the vibe is totally different. Makes me wonder if they're protecting history or just putting it behind glass. Has anyone else been to a site that changed so much it lost its feel?

Ever think they're just fencing off the feeling of the place along with the dirt?

Yeah, right? I went to Mesa Verde and felt the same way, like @the_margaret said, they fenced off the whole feeling.
