Pro tip: I used to think ground-penetrating radar was the only way to map a site before digging.

For years on digs in places like the Orkney Islands, we'd rely on GPR for everything. Now, after seeing the results from a project at Çatalhöyük, I'm a big fan of using drone-based photogrammetry first. It gives you a full 3D model of the surface features for a fraction of the cost and time, which often points you to the best spots for the more expensive GPR work. Has anyone else switched up their initial survey methods like this?

Wait, is the extra step really worth it for every site though? I've seen drone photos miss a lot of the subtle stuff that only shows up underground. Doesn't it just add another layer of tech you have to pay for and figure out? Sometimes the old way works fine without making things more complicated.

My buddy's team in Cyprus wasted a whole week on GPR in the wrong spot.

Totally get what @oliver2 means. I was the same until seeing how much time a quick drone scan can save you.
