Pro tip: bring a measuring tape to any site walk, not a laser level

Last month on a dig in New Mexico, the crew lead kept calling out depths that were off by a few centimeters because his laser level needed a clean line of sight. A $8 fabric tape from the hardware store got us accurate readings in the trench shadows, and we wrapped two days early. Has anyone else run into gear failing just because the sun was in the wrong spot?

Trust the sun to mess up your gear just when you need it most, right? Lasers are great until they turn your trench into a shadow olympics. Tape never needs batteries or line of sight, so it wins every time.
