My trowel slipped in a 4th century cistern in Carthage
I was scraping a plaster layer last spring when my trowel popped a chunk loose. It fell into a dark hole behind the wall, and I heard a ceramic crack. Turned out there was a sealed amphora back there, and I'd nicked its shoulder. The shards were enough to date it, but I still feel sick about it. Has anyone else broken something important on site and had to tell the lead archaeologist?
