My shovel dented a 2,000 year old floor tile in Pompeii, oops
Was on a dig outside the forum last spring and one bad swing left a mark on a mosaic edge. The site supervisor laughed and said 'now it's a modern artifact too,' but I've switched to hand trowels for anything near surfaces since. Anyone else had a close call that made you change your whole toolkit?

Honestly I think you're way overthinking this. One little dent on a floor tile that's already been through earthquakes, eruptions, and centuries of tourists? That's nothing. Shovels are faster and honestly safer than crouching with a trowel all day, I've seen way more accidental damage from people getting too careful and slipping.
