My neighbor's old jar of nails made me think about archaeology

I was helping my neighbor clean out his garage in Austin last month, and he pulled out this rusty coffee can full of bent nails and old screws. He said his granddad saved every single one from building their house in 1948. It hit me right then, that's basically a tiny dig site. We weren't just looking at junk, we were looking at the story of how that house got built, piece by piece, by a guy who didn't waste anything. It made me wonder how many stories we throw away without even knowing it. What's the most normal thing you've found that felt like a real piece of history?

@lindab49 nailed it. Those old butter tubs are gold mines for stories.

Ever find a note in a library book? Found one from 1992 in a cookbook last week. Some guy's shopping list, eggs, milk, "call mom." Felt weirdly personal, like I was spying. My own handwriting is bad enough without leaving evidence for strangers.

That jar of nails is such a perfect find! My dad was the same way, saved every bit of hardware in old butter tubs. Honestly, get a cheap magnet on a stick from the hardware store for sorting. It pulls out all the nails and screws from the rust and dirt in seconds, saves your fingers. Lets you really see what you've got. Those little bits of metal tell such a quiet story.
