I lost it when a guy tried to pocket a coin from our Roman site

He thought it was a cool souvenir, but it's theft and ruins context. We had to stop everything and call security, which wasted a whole afternoon.

This kind of thing happens all the time. People pocket napkins from restaurants, take pens from banks, or swipe soap from hotel rooms. They think it's no big deal, but it adds up and messes with how things are supposed to work. Like your Roman coin, it's not just about the item itself, but the context it's ripped from. We end up wasting time and resources because someone wanted a freebie. It shows a real lack of foresight.

Last year at a dig in York, someone nicked a piece of pottery before it could be recorded. That find is just gone forever now, while the guy who took it probably has it in a drawer somewhere. It really does wreck the whole point of being there. I feel for you, losing that afternoon over a coin.

Honestly, stuff like that makes my blood boil. Tbh, I saw a volunteer try to sneak a bone fragment into their bag once, and it messed up the whole grid record. Ngl, it's selfish and ruins the work for everyone else.
