Hit 300 pottery sherds in one afternoon and almost lost my mind

I was out on a site near Chaco Canyon last month, screening for artifacts, and I reached exactly 300 pottery pieces by 3 PM. The funny thing is, I started counting because I was bored, but then I couldn't stop. Has anyone else ever gotten obsessed with a random number like that while digging?

Yeah the "I started counting because I was bored but then I couldn't stop" part really hit me. I do that all the time with random stuff like counting steps on a hike or how many times I check my phone in an hour, and then I'm just stuck in this weird number loop.

Wait is this something other people actually do too? I thought I was just weird. Honestly the phone check counting is scary familiar, like I got up to 47 times one afternoon and it really messed with my head. And then you start counting the seconds between checks and it turns into this whole obsessive thing that makes zero sense but your brain just won't let go. The hiking one is the worst for me too, because you're supposed to be enjoying nature but instead you're locked in a number loop wondering if you took an even or odd number of steps to that tree. It's like a switch flips in my head and suddenly nothing matters except finishing the count right.

Counting steps on a hike sounds like it would ruin the whole peaceful feeling of being outside.
