Field school dilemma: surface survey vs excavation units, which teaches you more?

I had to pick between two summer programs last spring, one focused on walking transects and recording surface finds in New Mexico, the other on digging 1x1 meter units in a shell midden in Florida. I chose the excavation one because I wanted hands-on stratigraphy experience, but 6 weeks in I realized most of our time was spent on troweling and bagging while the survey group back home posted about identifying 40+ artifact types daily. Now I'm wondering if I made the wrong call for someone wanting to go into CRM work. Has anyone else done both and found one stuck with them more than the other?
