Am I the only one who thinks we're too quick to dig up coastal sites?
Preserving history matters, but so does protecting fragile ecosystems.

Wait, really? Too quick? I heard about a dig that wrecked a whole clam bed in hours just to get to some old bricks. That ecosystem is gone now. We should think twice before rushing in.

Talk to the people who live and work there before you even bring a shovel. I learned that the hard way on a project that almost went sideways. Rushing just means you miss the stuff that matters, and then you're fixing problems for months. A good plan sounds slow but it's faster than fixing a wrecked site later. Get a local biologist to walk the area first, because sometimes what's under the surface is the whole point.

Feel that deep in my bones after seeing a tidal flat get torn up for a survey last spring. They lifted a whole section of marsh grass for a "quick look" and the crab population just crashed. It's never just dirt you're moving, it's a home.
