Was dead wrong about fall fertilizer for trees until last season

I used to think putting fertilizer down in autumn was a waste of money and time. Figured the tree was going dormant anyway so why bother. But my buddy Frank who runs a tree service in Ohio kept pushing it for like 3 years straight. Finally tried it on a row of maples I was struggling to keep healthy. Put down a slow release nitrogen mix in late October and by spring those trees had way more bud break and darker leaves than the ones I skipped. The roots were still active even with cooler temps and the fertilizer gave them a boost before winter hit. Now I do it every fall without fail. Anyone else flip flopped on this or still skip the fall feeding?
