Warning: That pruning sealer I used on oaks caused way more damage than good
Had a talk with an old timer at the county extension office last Tuesday who told me I was sealing up oak wounds all wrong for years. He showed me how the sealer traps moisture and lets rot take hold way worse than leaving it open. Anyone else ditch pruning paint after seeing what it does long term?

The extension guy told me the same thing and it blew my mind. It's like how we used to put butter on burns, thinking it helped when it just made things worse. We do this all the time with stuff around the house, like using duct tape on everything or putting WD-40 on squeaky door hinges that just need tightening. Sometimes trying to "fix" something just makes a bigger mess than leaving it alone.

Hear me out but I still use it on bigger cuts on my oaks, just way less than I used to. I figure if the cut is done right and clean, the sealer dries quick enough that moisture can't really pool up before it sets. You ever try a thin coat instead of slathering it on thick?
