Tried a rope wrench instead of a mechanical Prusik on a big removal yesterday
I had a 60 foot white oak limb hanging over a garage and debated between my usual Hitch Hiker and a borrowed rope wrench setup. Went with the wrench because it was lighter and I wanted less friction when advancing up the TIP. The extra control on the descent was nice but I missed the automatic grab of the mechanical - has anyone switched back after going to a rope wrench?

60 foot white oak over a garage? You're insane.

I read somewhere that white oaks have root systems that can stretch out as far as their branches are tall, so a 60 footer could have roots reaching into a garage foundation pretty deep. That sounds like a recipe for cracked concrete and expensive repairs down the line, not to mention the liability of a limb falling on the roof during a storm. Honestly, it's a gamble that might look fine now but could cause a huge mess later lol.

Yeah, you're probably right about that root spread. My dad had a big silver maple way too close to the house when I was growing up and the driveway looked like a battlefield with all the cracks and heaves. I guess I've got a soft spot for trouble when it comes to trees, even if my checkbook ends up hating me for it later. Maybe I should just build a really tall birdhouse instead and call it a day.
