Tried a new pruning sealer on a big oak and it backfired

I used that asphalt-based pruning sealer on a 40 year old oak in Durham last month and the wound is still weeping. The bark around the cut is starting to rot now. Anyone else had this happen with the store bought sealers?

Honestly, that asphalt stuff is the worst. It traps moisture inside and rots the wood. I've seen it do the exact same thing on a maple in Charlotte. You're way better off letting the tree heal on its own.

Honestly, is it really that bad though? I've seen plenty of old trees in my neighborhood that had asphalt patches from the 80s and they're still standing fine. Maybe it's just bad luck or the type of tree? I feel like people blame the asphalt too quickly without looking at other stuff like drainage or the soil quality. You sure it's not just that specific maple was already sick?

Blame the tree's age and Durham clay instead of the sealer.
