The 2017 derecho in Iowa changed how I read wind damage forever
I was climbing a 50 foot white oak outside Des Moines when it snapped at the trunk with no warning, and since then I always check for internal rot high up before I even set my spikes, has anyone else had a tree fail like that on a calm day after a big storm?
A white oak snapping at 50 feet is my actual nightmare and I used to think a calm day meant safe climbing, ha. Now I poke every trunk with a screwdriver before I even look at my spikes, which makes me look like a total weirdo at the trail.
