That time a guy told me to stop flush cutting and leave a collar
Old timer at the local saw shop said I was cutting too close to the trunk on a big red oak in Denver. I ignored him for six months until I peeled bark off a decayed stub and saw he was dead right. Anyone else have a mentor that finally got through to you after you messed up a few times?

Always trust the guy whose hands look like he's been grabbing hot pipes for forty years because mine were too smooth to listen.

Are you sure about that though? I've known plenty of guys with hands like sandpaper who still can't tell a Phillips from a flathead. Sometimes smooth hands just mean you haven't had to prove yourself yet, and that can be its own kind of trust.
