Cut the branch flat against the trunk" - I'm sorry, WHAT? That's not a pruning cut, that's a butchery job. I hope that tree survived after that nonsense.

That 2 inch diameter branch he was working on in the photo was left with a ragged stub about 6 inches long. @violamurray is right to be upset about the flush cut stuff, but that stub is just asking for rot to set in over the next couple years. I've seen branches die back from those leftover stubs way faster than people think. A proper cut right at the branch collar would have been the middle ground there, not stubs or flush cuts.
