Spent a whole afternoon on one maple in Denver that should've been an hour job
I had a routine sugar maple removal last Tuesday, simple backyard tree with good drop zones. But the homeowner had buried a concrete birdbath base right at the base of the trunk years ago, totally hidden under mulch. Wrecked two chains on my saw before I figured out what was happening, then had to dig out two feet of concrete by hand. Took me about four hours instead of the one I bid for. Has anyone else run into hidden debris messing up a simple removal?

Holy crap, a whole concrete birdbath base buried under mulch? That's some serious bad luck, I would have lost my mind after the second chain.

Plus side, @bennett.noah, your chains probably wouldn't have lasted much longer anyway with that kind of hidden concrete. Mulch hides more than just dirt, turns out it's great at hiding landscaping time bombs. At least now your tree work buddy gets a free blade or two out of this mess.
