Showerthought: I figured climbing spikes on live trees was no big deal, but a botched removal job showed me the harm.

Yeah, learned that one the hard way too. My early climbing days left some trees looking like they lost a fight with a porcupine. Not my finest moment.

On my last trip to Joshua Tree, I saw some guys using wide straps that still left marks on the junipers. I mean, maybe it's just me, but I've had round ropes work fine when I add a bit of old carpet under them. They don't always dig in if you spread the load right. Honestly, a lot of it comes down to how careful you are with the setup. Idk, maybe I'm wrong, but I've seen both methods fail if someone isn't paying attention.

Wide webbing straps are your best friend for tree protection. They spread the load so much better than round ropes, which dig in and cause harm. It's a simple switch that makes a REAL difference.
