Shoutout to the retired climber in Bend who saved my maple
Honestly I was about to take down this big leaf maple at a customer's place on 3rd Street because the union looked rough and I figured it was gone. A retired climber named Dale who lives nearby wandered over and said to just cable it and thin the crown instead, that the tree had 20 more years in it. I did what he said, and 8 months later that maple is pushing new growth like crazy. Has anyone else had an old timer talk them out of a removal?
Read a story once about a guy in Portland who was ready to drop a huge oak and some old lady who used to work for the city talked him into bracing it instead. Tree ended up fine for another decade. Those old timers know stuff you can't learn from a textbook. They spent 30 years in the canopy watching how trees actually heal.
