Pro tip: stopped hand-tensioning my climb line by feel and started using a $12 shark fin, and my knots quit slipping
For 5 seasons I'd just pull until it felt right, then last spring a guy on a removal crew in Bend showed me his trick: a little plastic fin that clips on the line and squeezes the rope so it holds tension while I tie. Sounds dumb but I haven't had a knot creep on a single drop since, and I'm not second-guessing every tie-in anymore. Anyone else run something like this or am I just late to the party?
Watched a buddy of mine learn this the hard way last winter when his friction hitch let go halfway up a fir and he slid down eight feet before it caught. He picked up one of those little tension tools after that and swears it fixed his problem too, mostly because he was guessing at tension instead of feeling it. Cheap fix for something that can really mess up your day.
