I finally stopped hating on air spades after watching one work

Used to think air spades were overkill, just a fancy way to blast dirt everywhere. Last month I watched a guy clear a root collar on a mature oak in Portland that I'd been tip-toeing around with a hand shovel for years. The way it exposed the flare without nicking a single root made me admit I was wrong. Has anyone else switched tools after seeing them used right, or am I the last holdout?

Hold on, is clearing a root collar really worth dropping serious cash on a new tool? I get that it looked clean and all, but a hand shovel done right gets the same job done, just slower. Seems like a lot of fuss for something you might do once a year.
