Yeah, that "80% happens in the first 2 years" really drives home how important early care is. Most people think once a tree is in the ground it's fine to just let it be, but that's just not true. You've got to keep a close eye on watering and mulching during that time because the roots are still so fragile. I've seen trees that looked healthy for a year then suddenly went downhill because nobody paid attention to them early on. It makes sense if you think about it, they need that extra help to get established before they can handle tougher conditions.

Have you seen that study from the University of Minnesota about how young trees need way more water than people realize? I read that during the first two summers they can need up to 20 gallons a week if its dry, and that really stuck with me. It's wild how something so simple can make or break a trees whole future.
