Used to think freeze dried eggs were a waste of money until my stockpile got flooded

I had a whole pantry of canned goods and MREs in my basement, but after a pipe burst last March I lost about 40% of it to mold and water damage. Everything in cans was fine, but the bags of rice and boxes of pasta were toast. A friend from my local prep group in Boise had been telling me for years to get freeze dried eggs and milk, and I always said they were overpriced and tasted like cardboard. After that flood, I ordered a few #10 cans of eggs just to try them out, and honestly they are way better than I expected. Scrambled up with some salt and pepper, you can barely tell the difference. Now I am slowly replacing my stock with more freeze dried stuff because it is lighter and seals up tighter against moisture. Has anyone else had trouble with bulk dry goods going bad in damp basements?

Nothing like a soggy rice funeral to change your mind on freeze dried eggs.

Freeze dried eggs are fine for what they are. But calling it a wake up call feels dramatic. Rice gets soggy, it happens. Not the end of the world. People act like a bad meal is a life lesson. Maybe the rice was just cooked wrong in the first place.
