TIL I was wrong about freeze dried food lasting forever
I always thought that if you sealed up MREs or freeze dried meals, they'd be good for like 50 years easy. Then I read a report from a guy who cracked open a 15 year old bucket from Mountain House and the rice was basically dust. He said even at 70 degrees, the shelf life is way shorter than people claim. Now I'm rotating my stash every 5 years instead of just buying it and forgetting it. Has anyone actually tested their old emergency food and found it still tasted ok?

Wait wait... the rice was literally dust? Like powdered? That's wild. I always figured freeze dried stuff would outlive me.

Does the dust trick work with any other foods or just rice? I'm trying to picture a world where my emergency stash of granola bars turns to powder.
