My mechanic cousin said "nobody evacuates on a full tank of gas" and now I keep 15 gallons in the garage
He told me this after I mentioned my go bag had everything but fuel, and it hit me that I'd been prepping for the wrong first 48 hours. Now I keep two 5 gallon cans plus a siphon hose, rotated every 3 months with Sta-Bil in them. Anyone else stash gas, or am I asking for trouble with the fumes?
Keeping 15 gallons in the garage makes my two little cans look like a joke, so you are in good company. Mine sit in a locked cabinet away from the water heater, and the Sta-Bil gets swapped out every few months whether I remember or not. The fumes are only really an issue if you store them somewhere closed up with no air moving, so crack a window or keep the door open a bit. Just do not let your cousin talk you into a 55 gallon drum next.
