My $70 water filter system was a complete waste after the power went out
I bought a countertop reverse osmosis unit last fall, figured it'd be great for bugging in during a grid-down scenario, but when I tested it during a 3 day outage the pump wouldn't run without AC power. Now I'm stuck with a fancy paperweight and a bunch of filters I can't use. Has anyone found a gravity fed filter that actually works well for long term without electricity?

Wait, hold up. You bought a reverse osmosis system without checking if it runs on batteries or a hand pump? That's like buying an electric car for a road trip across the desert. No offense but that's just plain not thinking it through. RO is power hungry by nature, you can't just plug it in and expect it to work off the grid. For gravity fed, look into a Berkey or a DIY bucket filter with ceramic candles. Those don't need anything but gravity and some patience. But seriously, you dropped $70 and never tested it with a simple battery backup? That's on you.
